Why another lethal policy for Handloom?

By Ranjan Bisoi, Vriksh member
An elaborate op-ed article in the oriya daily Sambad reminding us of the Colonial exploitation, neo-liberal policies, the Dunkel draft, and how handloom has been violently pushed towards a serious decline. It questions the objective of the Ministry of Textiles and the Planning Commission of India’s attempts to redefine the very definition of ‘handloom’ in order to provide subsidies to the mighty power loom sector that already dominates India’s textile production. If the government succeeds, it surely means the very backbone of Indian economy will be broken again like East India Co. day.
